Like me, you’ve probably worked in lots of different teams in your life; some good, some bad, some average. If you’re really lucky though, you may have been a part of something even bigger and better. I’m talking about a high performance team. It might have been in your working life, but it may just as easily have been in a sporting team or any other organisation.
I’m lucky to be part of a very high performance team, but if you’ve not experienced such a thing (let’s face it, most people don’t) then it’s helpful to look at some well-known high performance teams. The easiest examples to spot are in the world of professional sport. My favourite analogy is to use a motorsport pit crew (think Formula 1, NASCAR, V8 Supercars etc).
Are Facebook ads worth spending money on?
This is the question that’s on everyone’s lips, especially after so many large advertisers have pulled the plug on their Facebook ad budgets. Let’s not beat around the bush. The answer to the question is YES, absolutely!
So why does it seem like every business you talk to hates Facebook ads and sees them as a waste of time, effort and money? It’s because they’re using them the wrong way. Most businesses treat Facebook ads the same way they treat traditional advertising, and it just doesn’t work.
UPDATE: Since posting this article Telstra has removed the ads and is looking into the cause.
There are some new ads going around on Telstra pay phones at the moment, advertising Anchorman 2. The ad concept is great; it’s just hair and a moustache, and you can put your face in it to take a photo. Below the ad is a QR code and an NFC tag for some sort of Telstra promo. But there was a problem…
Penguin Recovery? More Like Snake Oil!
Google’s Penguin update is something that has affected many businesses, and will continue to do so as Google releases regular updates to the algorithm. The Penguin update can be a little bit confusing, and it seems that even some SEOs are confused. For example, one very large Australian SEO business (which shall remain nameless) is promoting a “Penguin Recovery Package”. Their page lists the process they go through in trying to remove the “Penguin penalty” from your website:
1. Link Assessment
We conduct a thorough assessment of your backlink profile to find out what caused your rankings to plummet.
2. Link Recovery
We contact low-quality backlinks and ask them to update or remove the links causing issues.
We disavow any links we cannot update or remove.
We contact Google notifying them of the changes we’ve made to your backlink profile and ask them to remove the penalty and reinstate your website rankings.
Penguin is not a manual penalty that is applied to your website, therefore sending a “resubmission” (by which I assume they actually mean a reconsideration request) to Google won’t actually do anything as there is no penalty that someone can just press a button to remove.
Last night’s Networx event was all about social media marketing. The panel featured discussion around how to utilise social media in your business, how to measure results and how to convert fans and followers into sales. There were some excellent points highlighted, many of which you may have read in my article about social media for small business. Below, you’ll find a summary of the night’s key points.
If you own a small business, please take the time to read this whole article. It may be long, but will really point you in the right direction and steer you away from potential pitfalls that reduce the effectiveness of your social media efforts.
If you read the press and talk to most businesses, you’d be forgiven for thinking that social media is a waste of time and money. Articles like this one from SMH would almost have you closing all your social media accounts as soon as you’d finished reading the article. But it’s all a load of BS.

Last week I attended the inaugural Interactive Minds Digital Summit along with 350 other Queensland marketers. It was an all-day digital marketing conference featuring some great speakers, including Noah Kagan from AppSumo. The whole day was very insightful, but if you didn’t get to attend, I’ve shared the highlights below.
